Selling a blog

by scott on October 14, 2009

If you are running a blog that is making a good amount of money for you and your thoughts now are to sell the blog to make a good chunk of money in one go then, you can easily do it by following a few simple steps. Many people who want to sell their blogs don’t really venture into doing it because they think that it is a daunting task. But you will be surprised at how easy it can be to sell your blog and make a lot of money with ease.

The first and most important step is to analyze your blogs statistics.  You need to collect information such as –

  • Your blogs monthly earnings
  • The number of people that visit your blog or your monthly traffic data
  • What audience does your blog cater to and what do these people do
  • What rank does your blog hold in the search engine rankings and does your blog have any exclusive key words that are specific to your blog.
  • Check and note what links exist on your blog and are any of these from top websites
  • The expenses incurred every month to run and maintain your blog
  • The exact timeframe that your blog has been running

Now, this may seem like a lot of data to collect, but there are numerous resources on the web that can help you gather all of this information and more, if needed, in a span of 20 to 30 minutes.

The next step is to find out the worth of your blog. A quick rule of thumb is to double your annual revenue, add premiums and subtract the cost of running your blog. This should give you a good estimate of how much you need to price your blog at. Every website is different however.

Finally, you need to find a buyer. There are a number of ways you can do this. One of the most popular way is to make it known publicly that you are looking for a buyer. A note can be put up on your blog itself, so interested parties can contact you directly. Sometimes this works negatively as people who regularly read your blogs might not like the idea of you selling out.

There are other ways as well such as, contacting different blog networks and checking to see if someone is interested in buying your blog or talking to people you know might be interested or paying an agent to find you a buyer.
